Become a Pop & Rock Choir Leader (Kamloops, Vernon & Salmon Arm)

Amazing Singing is built around more than just singing. It is built around leadership, mentorship, community, and helping everyday people discover what their voices are capable of.

As Amazing Singing continues to grow across the BC Interior, Sylvain Vallée is looking to mentor future choir leaders who are passionate about contemporary music, harmony singing, and creating supportive musical environments for others.

This is not a formal conservatory-style conducting program focused on technical theory and classical choral traditions. It is practical, hands-on mentorship rooted in the real-world experience of leading modern pop, rock, and a cappella choirs composed of singers from all backgrounds and experience levels.

Mentorship Overview at a Glance

  • Mentor: Led personally by Amazing Singing founder Sylvain Vallée

  • Location: Hands-on training during live rehearsals in Kamloops, Vernon, or Salmon Arm

  • Background Needed: Strong musicality and a passion for people (no formal music degree required)

  • Format: Practical, real-world shadowing, sectional leading, and rehearsal management

Learning Through Real Rehearsals

Choir leadership mentorship is built around practical experience rather than classroom instruction.

Future choir leaders learn by observing rehearsals, participating in the Amazing Singing environment, and gradually developing leadership skills through real-world experience. That includes learning how rehearsals are structured, how harmonies are introduced, how singers are supported through difficult sections, and how groups prepare for live performances throughout a season.

Over time, mentorship may also include opportunities to lead warmups, direct vocal sections, support rehearsal flow, and work more directly with singers in rehearsal.

The goal is not simply to teach conducting patterns. It is to help future leaders understand how to guide, support, and inspire a choir in a way that feels engaging, musical, and approachable.

A Different Kind of Choir Leadership

Leading a contemporary pop and rock choir is very different from directing a traditional choir.

Rehearsals move quickly. Some singers learn by ear while others rely on learning tracks and repetition. Some members are experienced performers, while others may still be learning how to match pitch confidently in a group setting. A choir director needs to know how to manage all of those dynamics while still keeping rehearsals productive, welcoming, and enjoyable.

Sylvain’s approach focuses heavily on rehearsal atmosphere, vocal blend, communication, encouragement, and helping singers feel comfortable enough to participate fully. Musical leadership matters, but creating an environment where people continue showing up week after week matters just as much.

That balance between musical growth and human connection is one of the foundations of the Amazing Singing approach.

Supporting Adult Singers

Many adults join a choir carrying years of self-doubt about their voices.

Some have never sung in front of other people before. Others sang years ago and lost confidence over time. One of the most important parts of choir leadership is understanding how to support singers while helping them continue to grow musically.

This mentorship focuses heavily on:

  • communication

  • encouragement

  • rehearsal pacing

  • confidence-building

  • helping singers feel safe participating

  • creating a positive rehearsal culture

A great choir director is not simply someone who understands music theory. It is someone who knows how to create an environment where people feel comfortable learning, participating, and improving together.

Contemporary Music. Contemporary Leadership.

Amazing Singing focuses on contemporary pop, rock, and a cappella music rather than traditional classical choral repertoire. That creates a very different rehearsal environment and leadership style.

Songs are often taught through listening, repetition, sectional work, and vocal demonstration rather than relying entirely on sheet music. Rehearsals balance musical instruction with energy, pacing, humour, and interaction to keep singers engaged throughout the season.

Future choir leaders learn how contemporary repertoire, modern rehearsal techniques, and accessible teaching methods work together to create a choir experience that feels exciting, social, and approachable for modern adult singers.

Opportunities for Future Growth

Amazing Singing continues to grow throughout the BC Interior, with long-term goals that include expanding into additional communities and developing new choir leaders along the way.

For the right individuals, mentorship may eventually lead to opportunities to help lead or develop future Amazing Singing groups in other locations.

The vision is to continue building modern, accessible choir experiences that help more people discover the joy of harmony singing, contemporary music, and community connection.
